Back to School

It's that time of year again! The lazy days of summer are gone. Waking up to an alarm clock, school, homework and extracurricular activities are back. While we often enjoy getting back to a routine, we tend to tire ourselves, and our children, out with hectic schedules.

As you prepare to deal with this transition, what goals do you have for your kids? How do you plan to maintain an adequate balance so that they are learning in school as well as getting good nutrition (even when on the go) and are leading active lives.

There is a lot that can be done to help make the transition a smooth one. Establishing a routine is very helpful. Have a set bedtime each night and make sure your kids get adequate sleep. After school, make sure each child has a dedicated space to do their homework. For younger children, the kitchen or nearby is a great place because you can be there to assist. For children who are too young for homework, make sure you plan an activity such as coloring a picture or playing with a sticker book, to keep them busy while you help older children and prepare dinner.

Along with getting enough sleep, make sure your kids are getting good, nutritious meals. They do not have to be elaborate or require a lot of preparation time, but feeding them well will help them stay sharp for school, homework and activities. If your kids bring their lunch to school, give some thought about what healthy lunches and snacks you can pack for them. Talk to other parents for their ideas.

Additionally, to stay sharp in school, activity is essential to your child's day. They get recess and PE at school, but are you making sure they are staying active when not in school? Sports and outdoor playtime are great ways to achieve this. If other activites don't allow much time, you could go on a walk as a family after dinner. Exploracise Gymathtics is another great alternative, and something the kids can do while you are busy around the house getting dinner ready or doing other things. It's an award-winning program endorsed by moms and teachers, and loved by kids throughout the country, which will keep your kids learning math skills while they stay active. They'll have so much fun they won't even know that they are learning. To learn more or order your own DVD, visit our website.
